 ABUTILON

Definition: A genus of malvaceous plants of many species, found in the  torrid and temperate zones of both continents. Also called Flowering Maples and Indian Mallow.

Description: Found in Warmer Climates, these deciduous, herbs and shrubs are also known as Flowering Maples. It's flowers have bell or saucer shaped flowers. Most of the time it is orange but at times can be found in red, white or yellow.

ACACIA

Definition: Any of various spiny trees or shrubs of the genus Acacia.

ACANTHUS

Definition: A genus of herbaceous prickly plants, found in the south of Europe, Asia Minor, and India.

Description: These wild perennials grow mainly in Romania, Greece, eastern Mediterranean, and Africa. Also known as Bear's Breeches. They form lush clumps of shiny, dark green, lance-shaped leaves, which are deeply lobed. The leaves  are strewn with spines. The funnel shaped flowers grow in spikes from 2 to 5 feet long, in the summer.

ACHILLEA

Definition: Any of several plants of the genus Achillea native to Europe and having small white flowers in flat-topped flower heads.

Description: Popularly known as Woolly yarrow. It is a mat-forming perennial plant that may reach 6 to 12 in. tall and 18 in. wide. The evergreen leaves, which are light green, pinnately dissected, and hairy on both sides, reach 2 in. long and are aromatic when crushed. Flowering begins in June and continues throughout the summer. Flowers are very tiny, yellow, reach 1/8-in. diameter, and form dense clusters 1 to 2 in. long. The fruit is a non-ornamental achene.

ACONITE

Definition: The herb wolfsbane, or monkshood. Applied to any plant of the genus Aconitum (tribe Hellebore), all the species of which are poisonous.

Description: The plant is a hardy perennial, with a fleshy, spindle-shaped root, pale colored when young, but subsequently acquiring a dark brown skin. The stem is about 3 feet high, with dark green, glossy leaves, deeply divided in palmate manner and flowers in erect clusters of a dark blue color.

ADDER'S TONGUE

Definition: Ferns with fertile spikes shaped like a snake's tongue.

Description: The plant, which is quite smooth, grows from a small, slender, ovoid, fawn-colored corm, 1/3 to 1 inch long. The stem terminates in a handsome, large, pendulous, lily-like flower, bright yellow in color, often tinged with purple and finely dotted within at the base, and with six stamens. It flowers in the latter part of April and early in May.

Description:  There is a legend that this plant grew up from the blood of Adonis when he was wounded by a wild animal. These plants, also known as Pheasant's Eye or Flower of Adonis, grow from 6 inches to a foot high, and the same wide.

ALSTROEMERIA

Definition: Any of various South American plants of the genus Alstroemeria valued for their handsome umbels of beautiful flowers.

Description:  The stems of these flowers are 2 to 3 feet long and branch into four to six short pedicels; each holding two to four flower buds. Colors include yellow, apricot, orange, salmon, pink, red, mauve, lavender, purple, cream, white and bi-colors. Alstroemeria typically last one to two weeks.

ALTHEA

Definition: A genus of plants of the Mallow family. It includes the officinal marsh mallow, and the garden hollyhocks.

Description:  Belongs to hollyhock family. Tall perennial (3-4 ft.). Covered with large pink flowers in late summer. The leaves have the texture of velvet, with the lower leaves being circular, 3-5 lobed, toothed and 1 1/4 to 3 1/4 inches wide. The upper leaves are ovate to lanceolate, pointed, lobed and toothed. It has woolly stems and several spreading, leafy branches. The flowers are generally solitary, 1-2 inches across,  pink or white notched petals. Flowers July through September.

ANEMONE

Definition: Any of various perennial herbs of the genus Anemone, native chiefly to northern temperate regions and having palmately lobed leaves and large flowers with showy sepals. Also called windflower.

Description:  The plants are perennial herbs. The flower stem bears one or several, white, red, blue or yellow flowers.  The fruits often have long hairy styles which aid their distribution by the wind.

ASPHODEL

Description:  The plant is about 3 feet high, with large, white, terminal flowers, and radical, long, numerous leaves. It is only cultivated in botanical and ornamental gardens, though it easily grows from seeds or division of roots.
